Description: This photograph is an aerial view of Bainbridge, Ohio, in 1949. Despite being somewhat out of focus, the image nevertheless provides good view of the town's layout and major landmarks. Founded in 1817, Bainbridge Township was named for Commodore William Bainbridge, commander of the USS Constitution during the War of 1812. The unincorporated hamlet of Bainbridge Center is both the geographic and historic center of Bainbridge Township. The town hall, churches, stores, shops, a school, and post office were established in Bainbridge Center. The architecture of houses in the area, most notably those built during the Greek Revival period, reflects the agricultural past of the community and its development in the twentieth century. Mounds often served as burial grounds for Ohio's ancient inhabitants, such as the Adena (800 BC-AD 100) and Hopewell (100 BC-AD 500) cultures, and archaeologists believe they may have also served as sacred spaces where religious acts took place, as well as serving as boundary markers. Description: Published in "Ancient Monuments of the Mississippi Valley" by E.G. Squier and E.H. Davis in 1848, this is a drawing showing an aerial view of the Seip Earthworks, a Hopewell site, in Bainbridge, Ohio, in Ross County. Seip Mound is one of the largest earthen mounds built by the Hopewell culture (100 B.C.-500 A.D.), an ancient American Indian culture group. The earthworks is 240 feet long, 130 feet wide, and 30 feet high. Originally, this mound was surrounded by a large, semi-circular enclosure that was connected to smaller circular and square enclosures. In all, the earthworks enclosed 121 acres with 10,000 feet of embankment walls. The Ohio History Connection excavated Seip Mound between 1925 and 1928. The excavation team discovered more than one hundred burials associated with a variety of artifacts crafted from exotic raw materials such as copper and mica. At the conclusion of the study, the mound was restored to its original dimensions. Between 1906 and 1909, the Ohio History Connection explored a smaller structure, composed of three connected mounds, located a short distance to the east of the large Seip Mound. This mound also was called "Seip Mound," but to avoid confusion it is now referred to as the Seip Conjoined Mound. Sometimes the larger Seip Mound is called the Seip-Pricer Mound. Camp Pike was a Civilian Conservation Corps (C.C.C.) camp, possibly on the site of what is today Lake White State Park in Waverly in Pike County, Ohio. A note on the photograph's reverse reads "Tomlinson." The Civilian Conservation Corps was a work relief program established as part of President Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal that employed young men, ages 18-25 and later expanded to ages 17-28, with jobs in the natural resources field. This is one of the many visual materials collected for use in the Ohio Guide. In 1935, President Franklin D. Roosevelt established the Works Progress Administration by executive order to create jobs for the large numbers of unemployed laborers, as well as artists, musicians, actors, and writers. The Federal Arts Program, a sector of the Works Progress Administration, included the Federal Writers’ Project, one of the primary goals of which was to complete the America Guide series, a series of guidebooks for each state which included state history, art, architecture, music, literature, and points of interest to the major cities and tours throughout the state. Work on the Ohio Guide began in 1935 with the publication of several pamphlets and brochures. The Reorganization Act of 1939 consolidated the Works Progress Administration and other agencies into the Federal Works Administration, and the Federal Writers’ Project became the Federal Writers’ Project in Ohio. The final product was published in 1940 and went through several editions. The Seip group of earthworks was built by the prehistoric Hopewell people in Ross County, Ohio. Description: Serpent Mound is a spectacular effigy earthwork of a serpent uncoiling along a prominent ridgetop in northern Adams County, Ohio. From the tip of its nose to the end of its tail, the effigy is 1,348 feet long. When it was originally described in 1848, the body of the serpent was five feet high and 30 feet wide. Excavations between 1887 and 1889 by Frederic Putnam, of Harvard University's Peabody Museum, revealed the structure of the earthwork, but Putnam did not find any artifacts that revealed the age or cultural affiliation of the mound. Until recently, archaeologists assumed that Serpent Mound was built by the Adena culture (800 B.C. to 100 A.D.) since two Adena burial mounds are located nearby. Yet Putnam also discovered traces of a village of the Fort Ancient culture (1000 A.D. to 1650 A.D.) near the Serpent. Excavations conducted in 1991 recovered charcoal that returned radiocarbon dates suggesting that the Fort Ancient people built the mound between about 1025 A.D. and 1215 A.D. Serpents are a common feature in the art of the Late Prehistoric Period (900 A.D. to 1650 A.D.). Many American Indians of the Eastern Woodlands believed the Great Serpent was a powerful spirit of the Underworld, and it is believed that Serpent Mound may be a representation of these beliefs. The head of Serpent Mound is aligned with the setting sun on the summer solstice and the coils may be aligned to the summer and winter solstice and equinox sunrises. These alignments support the idea that Serpent Mound had a ceremonial purpose for its creators. Frederic Putnam saved Serpent Mound from destruction. On his urging, funds were raised for Harvard University to purchase the site. Later, the ownership was transferred to the Ohio Historical Society. Serpent Mound is now recognized as a National Historic Landmark. Serpent Mound State Memorial is located 20 miles south of Bainbridge in Adams County. View on Ohio Memory.
